Sherwood, AR is a friendly, pleasant town nestled beside Little Rock. Filled with small-town charm and surrounded by nature, there are many great things to see and do in Sherwood and nearby. Let’s take a look at 5 of the best local attractions in and around town.
Lake Cherrywood Park
This scenic park is a peaceful area of well-maintained nature in the heart of town. The lake is large and excellent for fishing, always kept well stocked with bass and catfish. There’s a fishing pier stretching out over the water with a covered gazebo at the end, where you can sit and idle the afternoon away, angling, picnicking, or chatting with friends. For kids, the park has a playground with a swing set, and also basketball courts for shooting a few hoops.
Little Rock Zoo
At nearly one hundred years old, this superb zoo in neighboring Little Rock has 725 animals with over 200 different species. Take your kids along to see the lions, giraffes, crocodiles, monkeys, hippos, and more. You can learn all about how these animals live, both in captivity and in the wild.
There are also a few fun activities to try, such as feeding friendly lorikeet birds and also feeding fish and ducks at several feedings stations. They have an antique animal-themed carousel, a train to take you through the zoo, and two large houses for reptiles and tropical birds.
The Old Mill
Perhaps the most scenic thing you can see is a picturesque old watermill in stunning natural surroundings. The Old Mill was featured in the opening scenes of the iconic movie Gone With The Wind. Still to this day, it’s fully functioning, grinding grains as a trickling stream powers its wheel.
The gardens around the mill are filled with natural-style stone works, quaint wooden bridges, lush woodland, and beds of flowers. It’s a blissfully peaceful spot, ideal for quiet strolls, picnics, and plenty of pictures.
Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts
If you’re looking for a cultural outing, you can’t beat the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. Browse their extensive collection of international art, including works by renowned European artists such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Gogh, and Degas. There are also many pieces of artwork from Americans, including drawings by Willem De Kooning and Morris Graves. One of the gallery’s signature pieces is a cubist masterpiece by Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, named Dos Mujeres (Two Women).
This gallery is also a great place to experience performing arts of every kind. Depending on the schedule when you visit, you can see creative dance, live music, and full theater productions. Many performance programs are put on by local children’s theatre groups.
Roundtop Filling Station
This final attraction is a rather unique structure in Sherwood that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s one of the state’s oldest gas stations, built in 1936 before electric pumps were commonly in use. Still maintained in the same style and condition to this day, the gas station is a locally-loved landmark, and a nice little sight to visit for nostalgic value if anything else.
