6 Things to Know About Visiting the Old Mill
1. The Park Is Full of Art
Scattered throughout the park are a series of unique sculptures created by Señor Dionicio Rodriguez, an artist renowned for his secretive artistic processes. He never let anyone see just how he mixed his products for fear that someone would copy his work and he even went as far as peeling labels off jars before smashing them. A visit to the park will give you a glimpse of some of the work done by this secretive yet talented artist.
2. The Park Is Pristine
Thanks to a committee of volunteers known as FOM, you can expect a pristine park upon your arrival. The group takes care of making sure the landscaping is maintained and the beauty of the park is preserved. The group also monitors park structures for damage and then obtains the appropriate materials to repair the structures to maintain their historical integrity.
3. You Can Go on a Tour
Volunteers lead tours of the park, explaining its historical significance to visitors in attendance. If you’re unable to make one of the tours, interpretive graphics have been installed throughout the park to give a brief explanation of the park’s unique historical significance.
4. The Park Is for the People
The purpose of the park, while maintaining the historical integrity of the original site, is in essence to provide visitors with the opportunity to experience history. The park has been updated so that handicap accessibility is in every area of the park possible. Also, the park seeks to attract visitors and residents of the community along with students to give them opportunities for education by visiting the site.
5. The Park Was in a Movie
Old Mill was actually filmed for the opening scene of the award-winning movie Gone With the Wind. It is thought to be the only remaining structure still standing from the movie. Old Mill was honored on the movie’s 50th anniversary and has been visited by famous guests who also starred in the movie, including Rand Brooks who played Charles Hamilton, and Ann Rutherford who played Careen O’Hara.
