As we move forward into spring, we have more opportunities to get outside and enjoy nature. Leave your home for the day and go for a walk, run, bike, or hike in the beautiful areas around Sherwood, Arkansas. With several local parks nearby, you’ll have plenty of options for some outdoor activities and a relaxing picnic as well. Here are a few picnic-worthy spots to check out.
Burns Park
Situated right along the Arkansas River, Burns Park offers golf, fishing, trails, and plenty of picnic tables and covered pavilions. Take a set of wheels, bikes or skates, along for your visit and enjoy the multi-use paved trail that runs next to the river. Unpaved trails throughout the park are great for hiking and getting a little more in tune with nature.
You’ll have more than 15 pavilions to choose from for your picnic. If you’re planning a larger gathering, you can even reserve a pavilion, as some can hold up to 200 or more people. Other park features include an 18-hole disc golf course and a large playground.
T.R. Pugh Memorial Park
For a step back in time, visit T.R. Pugh Memorial Park and the old water-powered grist mill there, just a few minutes south of Sherwood near North Little Rock. This mill is the last-known building still standing from the 1939 film “Gone With the Wind.” You’ll see this mill in the opening scene of the movie as the credits roll and views of rural Arkansas pass across the screen. It was actually built in 1933 but was designed to look like it had been standing since the 1800s. A small waterfall and walking trails surround the mill and make this park a great spot for a relaxing time outside.
The park covers three acres of land, so you’ll have plenty to explore during your visit. Three picnic sites are located on the park grounds for a bagged lunch. Book a 30-minute guided tour of the mill if you have a party of 10 or more people.
Lake Cherrywood Park
Right in the heart of Sherwood, Lake Cherrywood Park is a quiet neighborhood park surrounding a small reservoir. Walk out onto the pier to enjoy some relaxing fishing or a nice view of the water. Kids will enjoy the on-site playground with swing set, and there are several picnic areas along the water.
Reed’s Bridge Battlefield Heritage Park
Combine nature and history with a picnic at Reed’s Bridge Battlefield Heritage Park. This is considered the best-maintained Civil War site in the state of Arkansas. Hike through the Bayou Meto Walking Trail, just a minute from the park and learn more about this battle fought here. Several informational signs are positioned along the trail to explain the area’s history. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, settle in for an outdoor meal at one of the nearby tables or benches.
If you’re looking for a place to spend some time with your family and loved ones around Sherwood, plan a picnic at one of these local parks. You’re sure to make some beautiful memories.
